How to choose the right permanent makeup course

Start with what you want your working week to look like, then pick the course that gets you there with the least detours.

  • Brand new to permanent makeup: most students begin with brows, the most common starting point in permanent makeup. Microblading suits clients with normal to dry skin who want crisp hair strokes; powder or nano brows broaden the skin types you can treat. Brow Mapping is a short add-on if symmetry is what worries you most.
  • Want more than one technique: the Triple Course bundles three techniques for $6,900, which is $1,600 less than booking them one by one.
  • Changing careers completely: the Comprehensive PMU Course runs three or six months and gives you time to build skill across many services before you take clients on your own.
  • Already a tattoo artist or PMU artist: scalp micropigmentation, paramedical scar camouflage and removal add services that not every studio offers.
  • Esthetician or lash and brow professional: the skin and body courses, eyelash extensions and threading fit easily into an existing treatment menu.
  • Experienced artist who wants to teach: ask us about the Instructor Course.

How to enroll in a course

  1. Call or book a free phone consultation at 310-446-7878 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm) to pick a course and date.
  2. Complete an online bloodborne pathogens certificate. It takes about 3 hours and is renewed every year; see our BBP certification page for details.
  3. Reserve your seat. Most courses take a $250 deposit, and you can pay in full or finance the rest.
  4. Get registered. For permanent makeup work, Elite registers you with the Los Angeles County health department as a body art practitioner for an added $100, renewed annually.
  5. Come to class. Your starter kit is included, you finish with a live model day, and graduates can rent a chair in Elite’s licensed Los Angeles salon while they build a client list.

If cost is the obstacle, look at our financial aid and funding options. Depending on eligibility, students use financing, Credee, EDD training benefits, WIOA or the California Department of Rehabilitation.
