Your semi-permanent eyeshadow questions, answered

Semi-permanent eyeshadow is detailed work on delicate skin, so it pays to understand the full journey before you book. Here is who it suits and who should wait, how your shade and shape are designed, how color heals and fades, aftercare for the first weeks, what affects the price, and how shadow compares with eyeliner.

Who it suits best

Clients who wear the same soft shadow every day and want it to stay put. Wait if you have an eye infection, recent eye or eyelid surgery, or are pregnant or nursing, and check with your doctor if you are unsure.

Designing your shade

Your artist studies lid shape, crease, and skin tone, then maps placement and blend before any pigment goes in. You approve the shape and color first, and the result is built gradually in layers for a soft, diffused finish.

Healing and fading

Color looks deeper and more defined for the first several days, then softens as the skin heals and flakes lightly. Sun exposure, oily lids, and skincare acids speed fading, which is why longevity differs from one client to the next.

Aftercare for eyelids

Keep the lids clean and dry, follow your artist's ointment instructions, and avoid eye makeup, swimming, saunas, and rubbing until healed. Sleep on a fresh pillowcase, ideally on your back, so the area stays clean and undisturbed.

What affects the price

Price depends on the artist you book, from a Master Artist to Grand Master Mahnaz Bahaelou, plus the complexity of your design. The second session, about four to six weeks later, is priced separately and refines color and evenness.

Shadow, liner, or both

Eyeliner and lash line enhancement define the lash line, while shadow adds color and depth across the lid. Some clients prefer to start with liner for definition, then add a soft shadow later to complete the look.

Can I wear contact lenses to my eyeshadow appointment?

Remove contacts before the appointment and bring your glasses. Lids can feel tender and look slightly swollen for a few days, so many artists suggest waiting until the area settles before putting lenses back in. Ask your artist what they recommend for you.

What colors work best for semi-permanent eyeshadow?

Soft neutrals such as taupe, brown, bronze, and smoky gray tend to heal more predictably and fade gracefully. Very bright shades can shift in tone as they lighten. Your artist will suggest colors that suit your skin and the look you wear most often.

What if I do not like how my eyeshadow healed?

Small adjustments in shape or tone are usually made at the second session. For bigger changes, cosmetic pigment can be lightened over time with removal methods designed for permanent makeup, such as saline removal, which Elite quotes at a free consultation.

Before

Before your appointment

  1. 01

    Confirm your appointment

Double-check the date and time of your appointment and confirm with the studio to avoid any misunderstandings. Being punctual and organized helps you start your PMU journey on the right foot.

  2. 02

    Fill out consent forms

Have all necessary consent forms filled out before your visit. This saves time during your appointment so you can focus on discussing your desired look with your artist. Please be aware that services may be filmed and used for social media marketing (an additional consent form must be signed).

  3. 03

    Avoid caffeine and alcohol

In the days leading up to your appointment, avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol. They can thin your blood and increase bleeding during the procedure.

  4. 04

    Hydrate your skin

Drink plenty of water in the days before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin holds pigment better and gives a more even color payoff.

  5. 05

    Avoid retinol products

Retinol increases skin sensitivity and thins the skin, making it more prone to bleeding. Avoid retinol on the treatment area for at least one week before your appointment.

  6. 06

    Get a good night’s sleep

Being well-rested helps you feel more comfortable during the procedure and promotes better healing afterward.

  7. 07

    Communicate clearly with your artist

Think about the look you want beforehand and be ready to share your expectations, preferences and any concerns, so you and your artist are on the same page.

Comfort

Does it hurt?

This is one of the top questions we get: does permanent makeup hurt? The short answer is no. Clients are always pleasantly surprised to find it is not nearly as painful as they imagined, because we use a medical-grade numbing cream.

Our numbing cream combines three ingredients — lidocaine, benzocaine and tetracaine — for a very strong numbing effect. Some clients feel slightly uncomfortable with the “scratching” sensation or sound, but most are surprised by how little they feel, and some even fall asleep during their appointment.
