Paramedical tattooing uses body art to create the perception of an areola and nipple for those who have had a mastectomy, helping them regain their confidence and feel like themselves again.
Areola reconstruction is a cosmetic tattooing procedure that involves using tattoo ink to restore the natural color of the areola. This procedure is typically performed for individuals who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery or those who want to enhance the appearance of their areolas due to changes from aging or other factors.
The procedure can last for several years or longer, depending on factors such as skin type and the client’s lifestyle. Areola repigmentation can provide a natural-looking result that can help improve the individual’s self-confidence and quality of life.
Most of our areola clients come after breast reconstruction, on one side or both. We also work with people after a reduction or lift that left the areola pale, uneven or scarred, after top surgery, and with anyone who simply wants color and symmetry restored. There is no medical requirement to have had surgery at all.
On a reconstructed breast the surface is usually flat. Pigment and shading are used to create the impression of depth, so that an areola and nipple read as three-dimensional under normal light. Color is matched either to your other side, where there is one, or to a tone you choose together with the artist. Where there is scarring around the reconstruction, scar camouflage is often done alongside it.
The reconstruction needs to be fully healed and the scars settled before pigment goes in, which is usually several months to a year depending on how you healed and what was done. We will always ask you to check with your surgeon first, and we would rather wait than work on skin that is still changing.
Plan for two appointments. The first builds the shape and lays the base color. The second, once the first has healed, is where depth and tone are adjusted to how your skin took the pigment, and it is the session that makes the result look real rather than flat. Recovery between them is minimal, with some swelling and redness for a few days.
Areola work is quoted after a consultation rather than from a price list, because one side and two sides are different pieces of work and scarring changes what is involved. The consultation is free, and there is no obligation to book on the day.

The level of pain experienced during the procedure varies depending on an individual’s pain tolerance, but it is always manageable. We use a topical numbing agent before & during the procedure, if needed, to minimize discomfort.
Areola re-pigmentation can last for several years or longer, but the length of time it lasts varies based on factors such as the individual’s skin type and lifestyle.
The recovery time for areola re-pigmentation is usually minimal. The tattooed area may be slightly swollen and red for a few days after the procedure, and the tattooed area must be kept clean and dry to prevent infection.
Areola repigmentation may be covered by insurance if it is performed as part of breast reconstruction surgery. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
