Cosmetic freckles
Freckle tattoos, also known as cosmetic freckles, are a cosmetic tattooing procedure that involves tattooing small shapes on the face to create the appearance of natural freckles. Using a tattoo machine, the artist will deposit pigment into the skin, creating small, natural-looking freckles that blend in with the individual’s skin tone and complexion.
Freckle tattoos can be done in a variety of colors and sizes, depending on the individual’s preference and desired outcome. The procedure is typically performed for individuals who want to enhance their natural beauty or those who have lost freckles due to aging or other factors.
Natural-looking freckles start with placement
Cosmetic freckles and beauty marks are small, but their placement and color make or break a natural look. This guide explains who they suit, how your artist plans the pattern, how the marks heal and soften, how to care for them, what affects the price, and how tattooed freckles compare with freckle pens and makeup.
Who they suit
People who miss freckles that faded with age, love a sun-kissed look without tanning, or want one signature beauty mark. The shade is matched to your complexion. If you have very reactive skin or a history of keloids, say so at consultation.
Mapping your pattern
Your artist sketches dots with a pencil, varying size and spacing so no two look identical, and checks the pattern in the mirror with you. Natural freckles cluster where sun hits most, so the nose and cheekbones are common starting points.
How they heal
Freshly placed freckles look darker and more defined, then form tiny flakes over several days before softening into a lighter, more natural tone. Judge the final result after full healing rather than on the day of your appointment.
Caring for new freckles
Wash gently, pat dry, and leave the tiny crusts alone so pigment is not lifted out early. Skip makeup, exfoliants, and saunas on the area while healing, then wear sunscreen daily, since sun exposure speeds fading.
What affects the price
The number of freckles, the size of the area, and whether you add a beauty mark all change the time involved. A follow-up visit to adjust or add marks is common. Pricing is shared at your free consultation.
Tattooed or drawn on
Freckle pens and makeup let you experiment day to day and wash off at night. Tattooed freckles save that daily effort and hold up through workouts and swimming. Testing a pattern with a pen first is a smart way to decide.
A unique focal point
A beauty mark tattoo is a cosmetic tattoo that involves creating a small, natural-looking mark on the face. This procedure is typically performed for individuals who want to create a focal point on their face or add a unique touch to their appearance.
It is important to note that, like any tattoo, freckle & beauty mark tattoos are semi-permanent and may require touch-ups over time to maintain their appearance.
Before your appointment
- 01
Confirm your appointment
Double-check the date and time of your appointment and confirm with the studio to avoid any misunderstandings. Being punctual and organized helps you start your PMU journey on the right foot.
- 02
Fill out consent forms
Have all necessary consent forms filled out before your visit. This saves time during your appointment so you can focus on discussing your desired look with your artist. Please be aware that services may be filmed and used for social media marketing (an additional consent form must be signed).
- 03
Avoid caffeine and alcohol
In the days leading up to your appointment, avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol. They can thin your blood and increase bleeding during the procedure.
- 04
Hydrate your skin
Drink plenty of water in the days before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin holds pigment better and gives a more even color payoff.
- 05
Avoid retinol products
Retinol increases skin sensitivity and thins the skin, making it more prone to bleeding. Avoid retinol on the treatment area for at least one week before your appointment.
- 06
Get a good night’s sleep
Being well-rested helps you feel more comfortable during the procedure and promotes better healing afterward.
- 07
Communicate clearly with your artist
Think about the look you want beforehand and be ready to share your expectations, preferences and any concerns, so you and your artist are on the same page.
Does it hurt?
This is one of the top questions we get: does permanent makeup hurt? The short answer is no. Clients are always pleasantly surprised to find it is not nearly as painful as they imagined, because we use a medical-grade numbing cream.
Our numbing cream combines three ingredients — lidocaine, benzocaine and tetracaine — for a very strong numbing effect. Some clients feel slightly uncomfortable with the “scratching” sensation or sound, but most are surprised by how little they feel, and some even fall asleep during their appointment.
Frequently asked questions
We change people’s lives.
Q 01How long does the procedure take?
The procedure usually takes between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of freckles/beauty marks desired.
Q 02How long do the tattoos last?
Freckle tattoos can last anywhere from six months to several years, depending on factors such as skin type and client’s lifestyle.
Q 03Can freckle tattoos be removed?
Because freckle tattoos fade & look more natural with time, most clients don’t seek out removal options. However, freckle & beauty mark tattoos can be removed with microneedling, saline tattoo removal, or laser tattoo removal if the client desires.
Q 04Will cosmetic freckles look fake?
Natural results come from variety: slightly different sizes, soft edges, irregular spacing, and a shade close to your own freckles or skin. Starting with fewer marks is wise, because more can always be added at a follow-up, while extra marks take much longer to remove.
Q 05Can freckles be added near my existing moles?
Cosmetic freckles can be blended among natural ones, but artists work around moles rather than over them. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that a mole that is changing, itching, or bleeding be examined by a dermatologist, so have it checked before cosmetic work nearby.
Q 06How many freckles should I get?
There is no set number. Some clients want a light dusting across the nose, others a fuller spread over the cheeks and forehead. Your artist will help you match density to your face shape and how bold you want the look to be.
