What paramedical tattoo training covers
Paramedical tattooing, also called medical micropigmentation, uses pigment to soften the look of scars and restore color after surgery. The work is quiet and detailed, and clients often arrive after a hard medical journey. These are the core skills behind scar camouflage and areola work, and the people this training tends to suit best.
Assessing scars and skin
Learning which scars are good candidates. Most artists only work on scars that are fully healed, flat and settled, and ask for a doctor's clearance when in doubt.
Matching skin tone
Mixing pigment to blend a pale scar into the surrounding skin, working in light layers, because skin color shifts with sun and season.
Areola repigmentation
Restoring the shape, color and illusion of depth to the areola after breast surgery, with practice on lifelike areola accessories before any client work.
Sensitive client care
Running private consultations, setting realistic expectations, and building referral relationships with surgeons and clinics who look for trusted artists.
Permanent makeup artists
If you already do brows or lips, paramedical skills add scar camouflage and areola services that are in demand year-round and not offered by every studio.
Nurses and clinical staff
Patient care experience helps, but tattooing in California falls under the Safe Body Art Act. Check county body art registration before taking clients.

Will I receive a kit?
Yes, you will get a Paramedical kit that includes a permanent makeup machine, pigments and accessories.
What are the requirements before taking the course?
You will need to complete an online Blood Borne Pathogen Training for Los Angeles County. You will need to be certified by the Los Angeles Health Department as a Body Art Practitioner in order to legally work on a model.
We can register you with the health department for an additional charge of $100, just make sure to email us your blood-borne certificate prior to attending the training.
What if I am coming from out of state?
Not to worry, we have years of experience training students from all over the world. If you are coming from out of state, you will need to be registered as a body art practitioner in Los Angeles in order to work on the model provided in the course.
In addition, when returning home, you will need to get registered in your local county as a body art practitioner in order to legally work on your clients.
Who can legally perform paramedical tattooing in California?
Paramedical tattooing is body art under California's Safe Body Art Act. Practitioners register with their county or city health department, renew every year, and work in a permitted facility. The Act does not authorize body art practitioners to perform medical procedures, so check with your local health department about your situation.
Do I need a medical background to take this course?
No medical background is listed as a requirement. Before class you need an online bloodborne pathogens certificate and registration with the Los Angeles County health department, which Elite can arrange for an added $100.
Can nurses take paramedical tattoo training?
Yes. Nurses often bring helpful patient care skills. A nursing license does not replace county body art registration, so plan to register with the health department where you will work.
Which scars are usually not good candidates for camouflage?
Scars that are still red, raised, or healing, and keloid scars, are generally not treated. A free private consultation and, when needed, your doctor's input help decide.
