Inkless or pigment
The two routes solve different problems, and our stretch mark camouflage page sets out which suits which marks, what results are realistic and how long to wait before booking. The same skill covers scar camouflage and areola reconstruction, and all three are taught in our paramedical tattoo training.
How to hide stretch marks: your options compared
Short answer: you can cover stretch marks for a day with body makeup, for several days with self-tanner, or for years with a skin-matched camouflage tattoo. Medical treatments such as lasers and microneedling can make marks less noticeable, but none removes them completely. The best choice depends on the color, texture and age of your marks.
The American Academy of Dermatology is clear that, like any scar, stretch marks are permanent, but treatment can make them less noticeable (AAD). Cleveland Clinic notes that marks usually fade on their own over six to 12 months and that newer marks respond better to treatment than older, deeper ones (Cleveland Clinic). Here is how the main options compare.
| Option | What it does | How long it lasts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body makeup or leg concealer | Covers the color difference with a skin-matched layer | Until washed off; can rub onto clothing or swimwear | A single event, photos, trying out the look |
| Self-tanner | Darkens the surrounding skin and marks so the contrast is lower. The AAD says it can camouflage early and mature marks but does not remove them. Sun tanning does the opposite, because marks do not tan. | Several days, fading as skin sheds | Pale marks on light to medium skin, summer months |
| Prescription creams (tretinoin, hyaluronic acid) | The AAD reports these made early marks less noticeable in studies | Needs weeks to months of regular use | New red, pink or purple marks, with a doctor’s advice |
| Laser treatment | Light energy prompts new collagen; done by a medical provider in a series of sessions | Gradual improvement, not removal | Texture and color, under dermatologist care |
| Microneedling | Tiny punctures prompt collagen and elastin. Cleveland Clinic says most people need three to six sessions, with full results in four to six months or longer. | Gradual, builds over months | Indented, textured marks |
| Camouflage tattoo (pigment) | Places pigment matched to your skin tone into flat, pale marks so they blend in | Years, with gradual fading and occasional touch-ups | Mature white or silvery marks that are flat |
| Inkless treatment | Works on texture with a needle and serum, no pigment | Results build over several sessions | Textured marks, or clients who do not want pigment |
Can you hide stretch marks with makeup at home?
Yes, for a day. Use a waterproof body foundation or leg makeup one shade darker than the marks, press it in rather than rubbing, and set it with powder. Indented marks can still show in side lighting, because makeup changes color but not texture. Self-tanner is the next step up for many people, but it needs reapplying every few days and can collect unevenly in marks with a different texture.
How long does stretch mark camouflage last?
Pigment camouflage is measured in years, not days. It does fade gradually, and how fast depends on your skin, how much sun the area gets, and whether you use exfoliating products there. Most clients plan on a touch-up at some point to keep the blend even. Two things matter for how good it looks over time:
- Healing time. The color looks stronger at first and takes several weeks to settle. Judge the result only after the area has fully healed.
- Your skin can still change. Weight gain, pregnancy or tanning after treatment can change the surrounding skin tone, so the match may need adjusting.
Inkless treatment uses no pigment, so there is no color to fade; it works on texture instead, and results build over a series of sessions. You can read more about both approaches on our inkless stretch mark treatment page.
Who should wait before stretch mark camouflage?
- New marks. Red, pink or purple marks are still changing. These are also the marks the AAD says respond best to medical treatment, so talk with a dermatologist first and consider camouflage once they have faded and matured.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding. The AAD advises checking with your doctor before treating stretch marks, since some products, such as retinol, may not be safe for a baby. If your marks came from pregnancy, our guide to post-pregnancy stretch marks explains timing in more detail.
- Keloid-prone skin or active skin conditions in the area should be discussed at consultation before any needle treatment.
